70MB of Additional RAM Unlocked for PS3 Developers

According to Joystiq.com, Sony has upgraded the PS3 over the past few months to unlock additional usable RAM for developers to work with.  The latest updates provided developers with an additional 70mb of RAM to work with, thus, taking the system’s OS’s memory footprint from 120mb’s to 50mb’s.

SCEA’s Patrick Seybold recently confirmed the change to Joystiq stating:

Since the launch of the PS3, we have been continuously making efforts to reinforce our support system to game developers, allowing them to express their creativity freely on the PS3. As part of this support for game development, the size of the PS3 OS memory footprint has been reduced through network update for the game developers.

A PS3 developer told Joystiq that:

any bit of RAM helps. Generally it probably won’t change design, but might allow extra effects resolution or dynamic lights or something. Probably more beneficial from the systems and art side then from design/gameplay.

Even though we won’t see any changes as soon as next month or maybe even this year this will only bring better looking games in the near future.

“PSN is no secret weapon”, says Sir Howard. “Leveraging PSN we are building a new network service that will connect many more network enabled product including Sony Bravias, Viaos and Blu-ray players.

“To satisfy the demand for more open systems and to broaden the array of network devices connected to our network services we are committed to extending that service to Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

“And as part of these initiatives we are also exploring consistent user interfaces across Sony Ericsson products to ensure a seamless and integrated experience for the consumer.’’

Could CoD franchise become subscription-based?

Even though Modern Warfare 2 was the #1 selling game in 2009, making more than $1billion, Activision-Blizzard is seeking ways of making up for a $286million 4th quarter loss, mainly caused by the dying Guitar Hero franchise. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick spoke with Yahoo Games during their quarterly conference call hinting that the Call of Duty franchise will be heading the way of World of Warcraft and become subscription-based.

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft has been reeling in the dough for Activision, bringing in $15 a month fees from their 11.5million subscribers. Kotick described the future of CoD this way: “If you think about the success that we’ve had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise.”

It makes sense, Activision is seeing the amount of money they could make from turning it into a subscription, but would you pay a monthly fee for online play? Or do you think that this is just one more way for Activision-Blizzard to make money off of gamers? This also begs the question, would DLC still cost extra on top of the monthly fee? These are all speculations as of now, but we will update you when we hear more on the topic.

DLC to be available for Bad Company 2 on launch day

In typical EA fashion, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will receive Downloadable Content (DLC) on launch day. BC2’s Senior Producer, Patrick Bach, spoke with Worthplaying.com and said, “We have an in-game store where you get free content or you can buy new content to the game, so it’s a very integral part of the game that we will have a long post-launch campaign. I think people will be thrilled to see what’s in that already. On day one, you will get some really cool stuff.

No word on if there will be a price to this “really cool stuff” or if EA will make it free for new buyers and sold separately for used copies of the game. Hopefully EA and DICE have learned from their mistakes from the previous Bad Company when they were threatened with a boycott for its (soon abandoned) marketing strategy which would have created an in-game gap between those who spent the extra money and those who didn’t. We will just have to see what happens on March 2nd, do you have your copy reserved yet???

State of the System

2

So, here we are.  2010.  The Playstation is coming up on its 4th year and where does it stand?  Where will it go?

Will it be the harbinger of 3D entertainment?  Will the motion controllers play a significant part in its future?  What games will define the Playstation’s market share?  These questions are important to all of us as gamers, and even more as owners of such an awesome piece of consumer hardware like the PS3.  If the Playstation 2 is any indication (they still make and sell games for that system!), then the PS3 has quite a life ahead of itself.

We know what has happened in the past, let’s take a look at where we’re headed!
